Bernadette DAGENS

is a French visual ceramic artist, humanist and resolutely turned towards the World. Human history and cultural differences nourish his art.

Born in 1966 in Bordeaux, France, she spent her childhood on a family winery where four generations lived on the property. Her love of the earth  was passed on to her by his grandparents and great-grandparents.

Her way of working the earth, her passion for its texture came to her very early. Based on academic codes, she began to form in volume before specializing in ceramics. Choosing to combine all her knowledge, she became a sculptor.

Her work is close to abstract expressionist movements as well as the feminist movement, but remains, for reasons of freedom, not affiliated with a particular movement. She explores the artistic representations of women by making very thread line sculptures. Her major work, in the form of an installation, is the “the long women march” consisting of 250 sculptures. It is followed by the “tall woman grass”, a monumental 3-metre work of a woman coming out of the ground and covered by grass.

“I have always liked to watch people live. I have a bulimia to understand the meaning of life in depth. I am interested in the history of the human condition and I feel very concerned about the place of women.”

Bernadette DAGENS exhibits in France and abroad in contemporary art centres or in art galleries. She creates contemporary works questioning the place of women in our society or the protection of our planet. Her works are very cheerful, covered with bright colors, to work better for a world of joy and peace.

“The women of my line family are important. I keep from my grandmother a rigorous education, mixed with the unconditional presence of a woman of character. From my mother comes the will to go to the end of my dreams and never let go of my dreams and my ideas. From my great-grandmother come the most beautiful and tender memories. She instilled in me until I was 18 a true passion for living.

For a long time, I was seized with an obsession to sculpt, bringing out all that could no longer be contained in me. This relentless work, at the limit of confinement, allowed me to go into the depths of the earth and the depths of the soul, to the mystical experience of non-separation.

Then I became calm. I needed this path to Be.”
